P.E.T.A:
Hypocrite: (hi-p&-"krit) n. 1.a person who puts on a false appearance of virtue or religion. 2.a person who professes beliefs and opinions that he does not hold.
What does PETA stand for? PETA stands for: People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. What is PETA? PETA is what could be defined as a "radical" group. They believe in animal rights and fight very hard for them. The only part they don't tell you is that they are against ownership and domestication of any animals, and they have fought long and hard to instate B.S.L. (Breed Specific Legislation). Now the part I don't understand is: how can wild animals have rights, but not domesticated animals. Besides, when is the last time you seen a cow running around in the wild? Or a wild chicken? Those aren't wild animals, they're owned and domesticated by people. So what's the difference between them and dogs or cats? Nothing, that is exactly the reason why I had to add the definition of hypocrite above, because if this isn't hypocritical then I have no idea what is. They see B.S.L. as the first step in ending all pet ownership. The worst part is that not all PETA supporters have these beliefs. The reason why PETA as a whole has these beliefs is because of Ingrid Newkirk the head of PETA. She claims to be an avid supporter of Pit Bulls, but there was recently a published article in which she called for the destruction of all Pit Bulls. She stated, "I have scars on my leg and arm from my own encounter with a pit." (Click here to read the whole article she wrote.) Now, because she had one bad encounter with a dog she wants to kill them all. You can also view a letter written to a Judge trying to sway him to euthanize 32 pit bulls from PETA here. PETA has also been suspected of killing animals - for more information on this you can visit PETA Kills Animals. You can also sign a petition here to remove PETA's tax exempt status. Feel free to let Ingrid and the other PETA members (most of which are unaware of PETA's stance on Pit Bulls) know how much you enjoy and love your Pit Bull(s). She can be reached at: PETA, 501 Front St., Norfolk, Va. 23501, or online at: PETA. There are also some other groups that are against Pit Bulls, have published anti-Pit Bull works, or have executed anti-Pit Bull actions. They are:
Continental Airlines: Continental Airlines restricts Pit Bulls. They do not mention American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, etc..., just "Pit Bulls." They will not ship them older than 6 months of age and/or over 20lbs. Their website reads:
"Embargo of American Pit Bull Terriers (Pit Bulls, Pit Bull Terriers)"
"Continental no longer accepts American Pit Bull Terriers and we will refuse any animal that is offensive or shows aggression. This embargo does not apply to American Staffordshire Terriers, Bull Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, or Miniature Bull Terriers. Crossbreeds with American Pit Bull Terriers are also excluded from this embargo."
Discovery Channel/Animal Planet: The Discovery Channel has produced and aired some very negative programs about the American Pit Bull Terrier. "Dangerous Dogs" and "Dateline Discovery" are filled with very inaccurate, biased information that conforms with the current hype and reputation of the American Pit Bull Terrier, instead of being filled with the unbiased information that you would normally expect from the Discovery Channel. Animal Plant (owned by the Discovery Channel) airs the show "Animal Cops" where the Michigan Humane Society and the Houston Humane Society show their ignorance and lack of understanding and compassion for the American Pit Bull Terrier on a weekly basis. The "information" their "humane officers" offer on a weekly basis is incorrect and further damages the Pit Bulls image and reputation. However, their show "Animal Precinct" offers realistic and unbiased information on all breeds.
