Anatomy of a Pit Bull:
Pit Bull Anatomy:
| Sight: | Pit Bulls, as well as all dogs sight, function primarily the same as humans. However they have a reflective layer on their eyes that intensifies the light making their night vision exceptional compared to ours. Most dogs have a visual field of 250 degrees, compared the the maximum human field of range at 190 degrees. They have great peripheral vision and can see excellent far away, but lack the ability to see details and sometimes miss smaller, stationary items. They can see in color, but they have a limited color palette in which they view from. Pit Bulls can detect movement at a greater distance than we can, but Pit Bulls can't see as well close up. They can also see better in less light, but can't distinguish many colors. |
| Smell: | A Pit Bull's nose is his greatest sensory organ. Humans have roughly 5 million scent receptors in their noses, but dogs have anywhere from 125-220 million scent (olfactory) receptors. Ideally, the longer the dog's snout the more scent receptors it contains. Their sense of smell can tell them what you've been doing, where you've been, what you've eaten and if your feeling well or not. A dog's sense of smell is so great they can follow a trail that's weeks old, detect odors diluted to one millionth the concentration we'd need to notice them, and even sniff out a person underwater! |
| Sound: | Pit Bulls, like all dogs, can hear about four to five times better than we can. (meaning if we didn't hear a sound until it was 25 feet away, they would have heard it when it was 100-125 feet away!) They also can hear high pitched sounds well, they can hear higher pitches than humans, but not quite as high as cats. They also have 18 or more muscles that move the ears in all directions for the best sound detection and reception. |
| Taste: | Pit Bulls have fewer taste buds than we do, so they're more likely to try anything, and trust me they usually will, which is why it is important for you to monitor their food intake. This is why most dogs are generally unselective and not picky eaters. Dogs are omnivorous, which means, they eat both meat and vegetables. |
| Touch: | Pit Bulls, like most dogs, are social animals and love to be petted, groomed, and played with. They also use their whiskers to pick up motions and vibrations in the air. |
